Here's a sampling of recent movies and television shows we've seen. I recently discovered the DVD catalog at the University library, and as a result have reduced my use of Netflix. The library has an excellent selection, although it is hard to find anything that has been released w/in the past year.
Casino Royale - Best Bond movie ever. (4.5 stars of out 5)
Stranger Than Fiction - Will Farrell plays it straight, and pulls it off. This is a great quirky, and at times serious, comedy. Excellent soundtrack as well. (4 stars out of 5)
MI-5, Seasons 1-3 - Known as "Spooks" in the UK, where the hit show is broadcast, it could be considered the British version of 24 or Alias. MI-5 is the domestic security service, so this show covers home-grown terrorism. By comparison, James Bond is an agent in MI-6, the foreign security service of the UK. The ensemble cast is great, and the show improved every season. (3.5 stars out of 5)
Firefly - This genre-bending series, which can be best described as a Sci-Fi Western, didn't even get a full season on FOX before it was canceled. However, it developed a cult following, and I can understand why. This is probably the most entertaining show I've seen in a long time. It has a great cast, and is an obvious homage to the Star Wars series. You'll either love it or hate it. (4.5 stars out of 5)
Serenity - Based on the growing popularity of the Firefly series after it was canceled, its creators were allowed to continue the storyline in this feature film. All of the original cast returns to help answer many of the critical unresolved questions that remained after the tv show abruptly ended. (4 stars out of 5)
